Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Department of Sociology
Sociology is one of the fundamental social science disciplines, alongside history, economics, anthropology, psychology, and political science. The aim of our Department is to establish an academic unit that operates in accordance with national and international standards of competence, engages in interdisciplinary activities, and contributes to the production, development, and dissemination of sociological knowledge in Turkey by also drawing upon the knowledge and methods produced in other core social science fields.
Founded with these objectives, our Department has been providing education since the 2001–2002 academic year. The language of instruction is English. Some of our students attend a foreign language preparatory class.
Our Department aims to educate students as individuals who possess sociological thinking skills, are aware of national and global issues, and strive to raise awareness. Our goal is to cultivate individuals who can establish a common language in communication with members of society; researchers equipped with the skills to conduct research, interpretation, and publication on social and professional matters; and citizens who have social sensitivity and a strong sense of social responsibility.
It is intended that a graduate of the Department of Sociology at Marmara University will be qualified to gain admission to and successfully complete graduate-level programs in sociology, other social sciences, educational sciences, or administrative sciences in Turkey or abroad; and to find employment and work successfully in fields such as education, research, planning, health and social services, management, mass communication, advertising, marketing, public relations, and other areas where fundamental social science knowledge and a sociological perspective can be applied.
